HED 235 - Nutrition - Quiz 2 Explanations

1.     F – Women who are pregnant should NOT be exposed to alcohol whatsoever. There is an increased risk of fetal alcohol syndrome during fetal growth (Text p.5-10)
2.     T – You cannot force a culture to change their dietary habits out of the blue. They need to accept the dietary changes and take them as their own (for example Americans accepting pizza or Asians accepting wheat as buns) (Text p.5-4).
3.     T – Emphasis on some artificial food color additives, the link between environment and genes is unclear. However, it is clear that food coloring can cause hyperactivity.
4.     T – Most of the severe damage of malnutrition occurs during infancy and early childhood when the brain is still developing whereas older children can typically recover from malnutrition if provided the right nutrients (Text p.5-9).
5.     F – Major cause of iron-deficiency anemia is an inadequate intake of dietary iron (Text 5-10).
6.     T – Change does not occur dramatically, long-lasting change requires small permanent steps towards the goal (Text p.5-7 to 5-8).
7.     F – Comfort and status foods gain their value not through nutritional importance, but through emotions and feelings they generate (Text p.5-4).
8.     D – All of the above. Dietary change requires knowledge, belief in choice affecting the outcome, and perception that the benefits outweigh the barriers (Text 5-7).
9.     C – During fetal development or infancy. Malnutrition is the most severe to behavioral development in infancy and early childhood (Text 5-9).
10. D – All of the above. Fetal alcohol exposure can lead to growth retardation, mental retardation, and learning + behavioral problems (Text 5-10).
11. E – None of the above; there are no food aphrodisiacs. Unfortunately, belief in food aphrodisiacs have been unfounded (Text 5-10 top).
12. C – Discuss the product with a registered dietitian. Whatever information placed on the supplement might be misleading and trying to fit the supplement into the ultimate goal of strength is difficult without expert advice.
13. A – The name implies the product has magical properties. It’s in the name!
14. B – Giving testimonials. When popular people or celebrities name drop, it’s to give a testimonial that was probably paid.
15. B – The product may not work the same way for everyone. Supplemental intake can vary heavily depending on the environment so anything guaranteeing 100% is BS.
16. C – Contact the Federal Trade Commission and register a complaint. Do not lash back at friends or the store, as they do not really solve the issue.  Rather take steps through the FTC to make sure the same does not occur to others.
17. D – All of the above. Discuss specific health products with health professionals. Or you could research on your own.

Discussion
1.     Advantages = Food sources of smaller quantities are clearly indicated at the top of the pyramid with the more common ones at the bottom. Disadvantages = Size not drawn to scale, not easily pictured when sitting to eat a meal.
2.     Sometimes bugs can get into your vegetables such as grasshoppers. While they are gross and can carry diseases, they can also add to the nutrition of the vegetables (a nice serving of crispy keratin).
